Fireboy and Watergirl

Elemental Rules Turned Into Puzzles

Fireboy and Watergirl is a cooperative puzzle-platformer built around a simple but strict elemental rule set: Fireboy can walk safely through fire and lava but dies instantly in water, while Watergirl passes through water unharmed but is destroyed by fire. Both characters must avoid poisonous green pools entirely. Every temple level combines these restrictions with levers, mirrors, and elevators that only one character can activate, forcing you to split duties, time jumps carefully, and share switches so both heroes reach their respective doors at the same time.

Controls: Two Characters, Two Key Sets

Control Fireboy with the arrow keys to move and jump, and control Watergirl with W, A, and D to move and W to jump — playable solo by managing both, or with a friend sharing the keyboard. Levers and switches typically only respond to one character's element, so figuring out which hero needs to act first at every puzzle is the core challenge.

  • Identify which character each lever or switch responds to before attempting a puzzle solution.
  • Position one character to hold a platform or switch in place before moving the other across.
  • Never let Fireboy touch water or Watergirl touch fire — both deaths restart the level immediately.
  • Plan the full sequence of moves before committing, since some puzzles require precise ordering.
  • Practice solo control of both characters before playing co-op so keyboard sharing feels smoother.
